Faster generic implementation for arbitrary number of binary nodes

I have a problem that I have already solved with a recursive method.
However, the number of binary nodes can be arbitrarily large, and there is another requirement where I need to increment a counter on each binary node with a property-specific function and then return the overall result. The problem is that I need to optimize this for performance, because there is a large number of binary nodes.
There is a recursive method that returns the total as follows:
