Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

Several competing CAD packages were available for the PC at the time. In 1980, Dennis Conway wrote Draw-0, which was marketed as an inexpensive 2D drafting program for MS-DOS and IBM compatible PCs. Draw-0 was subsequently bought by PageData in 1982, who then developed it further for personal computers and marketed it as Pro/Plus Draw. Other drawing programs included Architectural Desktop, Schematics, Solidworks, Mechanical Desktop, E-cad, etc.
The increasing demand for CAD and the lack of any serious desktop 2D drawing program drove Autodesk to develop a drawing software package for personal computers. AutoCAD was an entirely new product and had a much different approach than the others. It was more like a general purpose programming language than a traditional drawing program. Most notably, AutoCAD did not have any predefined concepts like boxes, circles, arcs, straight lines or any other basic graphical shapes. To create these shapes, the user would have to begin with a command to do so, then modify or add the specific shape. Instead, with AutoCAD, the user would simply type in a command line and create shapes. The only way to get out of the command line was to exit AutoCAD. This was a radical departure from the other CAD programs, and eventually contributed to the adoption of AutoCAD in the commercial industry.
Autodesk’s drawing package, AutoCAD, was released to the public on December 15, 1982. The program was developed for the newly released IBM PC XT and was created to work with a graphics board known as the video display adaptor (VDA). AutoCAD was first released on floppy disk (3.5 inch diskette) and was priced at $1,595.

Over the years, many attempts were made to improve AutoCAD. For example, an early version of AutoCAD that supported only straight lines and circles was introduced in 1983. The first version of AutoCAD, Version 1, was considered a milestone in the history of CAD, since it was the first to introduce the concept of blocks, which were key to the development of applications like Architectural Desktop and Mechanical Desktop. AutoCAD also introduced, for the first time, a command-driven interface that was more intuitive than menu-driven.
AutoCAD 2.0 was released in 1985, just as the XT was

AutoCAD scripting is provided in several languages: AutoLISP, Visual LISP, Visual Basic for Applications, a.k.a. VBA. AutoCAD supports various programming languages including Visual Basic for Applications, Microsoft Visual Basic, Powerbuilder, Modul8 PowerBuilder, and Delphi.
Raster and vector graphics
AutoCAD is able to render raster images using data from any graphics format supported by ADF, including bitmap, text, and vector graphics.
AutoCAD supports four models for dealing with raster data: one-layer, multi-layer, mipmap, and TrueType font raster images. In addition, AutoCAD can load TIFF, JPEG, and GIF raster images. AutoCAD, by default, uses MiliDisplay Manager to display image and raster data, and the raster editing window can also display and edit such data.
Vector graphics can be used in two ways in AutoCAD: creating a drawing that contains all the drawings for an assembly, or a few drawings for a specific section of a drawing. The first type of vector drawing is sometimes referred to as a “3D assembly” drawing. Vector drawing is particularly suitable for engineering designs.
AutoCAD is natively able to save in several file formats, including:
AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Wordpad or Microsoft Word.
AutoCAD may be used to open and edit files created with a wide variety of other products, including:
Cobalt CAD (CATIA).
AutoCAD started as an in-house product at PDI, a small software company founded in 1989 by four former University of Alberta students. The first version of AutoCAD was released in 1990 to the public as version 1.0 of AutoCAD Architecture. The first multi-user software for non-university, or corporate use was released in 1994 as version 1.1 of AutoCAD Architecture.
The development of AutoCAD Architecture was done in house until 1994. In 1994, the company bought out the team working on the CAD application. The company re-branded the product
